2018 Commonwealth Games logo unveiled

GOLDEN girl Sally Pearson seems to have been the inspiration for part of the new Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 logo.

Pearson was one of several medal-winning athletes who turned up for the launch of the emblem at Broadwater Parklands this morning.

While Pearson was unsure if the hurdler featured was supposed to represent her, she said it would be nice if it was.

”I’m not sure. It could be me. I think it is sort of nice to be here and see the hurdler up there,” she said, pointing to the giant logo emblazoned on a hot air balloon.

Also captured on the logo were images of a gymnast and a swimmer.

Games Minister Jann Stuckey described to the crowd how the Q1 building at Surfers Paradise had also been represented along with the city’s golden beaches and green hinterland.

”It captures the essence of the Gold Coast and what the Games are all about,” she said.

Games chairman Nigel Chamier said the emblem was the result of months of research and development.

”Local focus group workshops were held and we engaged brand and design company WiteKite,” he said.

About 200 Gold Coasters turned out to catch a glimpse of the new logo this morning.

The crowd was entertained by singer Jessica Mauboy.

A countdown clock in Surfers Paradise will be unveiled later this morning signalling exactly five years until the Games get under way.
